Metal Roofing Popularity Soars as Homeowners Seek Greater Long-Term Value

The first of 2020 is coming to a close.  All signs indicate that metal roofing is going to be as popular as ever with homeowners this year.

The Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) is the industry’s leading nonprofit trade association group. They report that metal roofing is the second most preferred roofing material in the U.S. and is continuing to grow in popularity. That’s true particularly in areas throughout the country that suffered extreme climate events last year and had strong repair and remodeling activity in 2019. The MRA predicts that recent global events, such as the devastating wildfires in Australia, also may have a spillover effect, driving more demand among homeowners in states that are particularly susceptible to these types of dangers, especially in the west.

Homeowners are recognizing that metal roofs offer better long-term value for the dollar spent, given that quality metal roofs last far longer than asphalt roofs and offer much greater protection and reliability in severe weather and climate conditions. Homeowners also appreciate the wide variety of styles and color options they can get with metal roofs.  Other materials have only limited choices available.

Environmental Concerns Driving Greater Metal Roofing Interest

Additionally, environmental concerns are driving greater interest in metal roofing this year. With residential solar systems and net zero homes becoming increasingly common, the long term benefits derived from installing quality metal roofs are being recognized for lowering energy use, reducing a home’s carbon footprint and preventing waste, since metal roofs can be 100 percent recycled at the end of their long life.

Yet even today, lingering misperceptions can be a barrier to residential metal roofing’s growth. For example, some homeowners still falsely believe metal may be noisier.  In fact, properly installed metal roofs transmit no more sound than other types of roofs. Choosing material and installers that meet quality standards is also essential to maximizing metal roofing’s longevity, protection and durability.

“MRA members like Classic Metal Roofs represent the best in the business,” said Renee Ramey, MRA executive director. “Thanks to our members’ efforts, their level of professionalism and commitment to the industry, we’re seeing more homeowners choosing quality metal roofs that they can trust to help protect and add value to their home.”
