Aluminum Standing Seam Metal Roof Advantages

standing seam

To install metal roofing, it’s important to first weigh its advantages over asphalt, wood, and tile. And of the several types of metal roofing, a standing seam metal roof provides durable, lightweight, fire-resistant protection. Metal beats out conventional roofing materials in the following ways.

Weight

Compared to the weight of tile or concrete tile, aluminum metal roofing is lightweight. Most varieties run from 50 to 70 pounds per square. Because of this material’s lightweight, you can downsize the number of roof support members. You can even install this over an existing roof without extra structural support.

Longevity

Installed in the right way, an aluminum metal roof will last as long as the house. It will seal out water, survive high winds, and shed snow with ease. Metal resists fire, mildew, insects, and rot. Warranties vary, but most metal roofing contractors back their products with workmanship and factory warranties for 20 to 50 years. Paint finishes usually have a 30-year limited warranty.

Fire Resistance

Metal roof materials are noncombustible and have the highest fire-resistant rating. Yet, this rating depends on materials beneath the surface that are not fire-resistant. Thus, metal roofs applied over combustible wood shingles have a lower fire rating.

Roofing Installation

Most metal roofing materials come in multiple-shingle styles and panels widths. An accomplished metal roofing contractor can install these correctly. Most of the installations done here in CT are done with high wind conditions in mind. Be sure to ask about wind rating. Also, be sure to read the exclusions in the factory warranty that address wind. We recently reviewed a warranty from a factory that stated a 160 mph warranty, but wind storms and hurricanes were exclusions in the warranty. Here, in New England, the only time we get high wind to such a degree would be Nor’easters and hurricanes.

Heat Conduction

Metal reflects radiant heat from the sun, allowing you to use less AC during the day and conserve energy. The material itself is low in insulation R-value. You can apply metal roofing, though, over rigid-foam insulation that has a high R-value. Many systems also use a no-air space between the metal and deck to increase energy efficiency.
